The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP) is one of the partners of PRIORITY, a European project which aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a psychological intervention programme for the prevention of child sexual abuse.

The result of a consortium between institutions from three countries – U.Porto (Portugal), University of Hamburg (Germany) and Karolinska Institute (Sweden) –  Prevent It aims to evaluate a psychological intervention method to help people with sexual impulses towards children to gain greater understanding and control over their thoughts, feelings and behaviour in order to reduce the risk of committing sexual abuse.

The effectiveness of the three language versions of PREVENT IT will be evaluated within the EU-funded project PRIORITY (Prevention to Reduce Incidence Of Sexual Abuse by Reaching Individuals Concerned About Their Risk to Young People). This project is a collaboration between researchers and clinicians from Karolinska Institute (Sweden), University of Porto (Portugal), University of Hamburg (Germany), Institute of Mental Health Research of the University of Ottawa (Canada) and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (USA).

Through PRIORITY it aims to contribute to the implementation of European legislation by reducing barriers to accessing preventive measures for individuals concerned about their risk of committing child sexual abuse, including cultural and language barriers, structural and technical barriers, legal barriers and national/country-specific barriers.
