On the 18th of March 2021, the Cine Debate took place, around the documentary “Teen Offenders: vulnerability and devotion to drug trafficking”, which is one of the episodes of the documentary series Retratos do Cárcere, by the production company Panda Filmes. Retratos do Cárcere involved four years of production and hundreds of hours of recording inside and outside prisons in four states: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul. All this universe, directly related to the advance of organized crime in the country, was put together in thirteen 26-minute episodes – each one with a theme related to imprisonment.
The debate counted with the participation of professor Marina Rezende Bazon, coordinator of the SuCCESS project, and Tatiana Sager, director of the documentary, and Renato Dornelles, the screenwriter. In the episode “Adolescent Offenders: Vulnerability and devotion to drug trafficking”, as pointed out by Professor Marina, the audience watches the testimonials of young people who have a history of involvement with the practice of very serious crimes, built in the interactions between multiple contextual factors, and linked to great social vulnerability. In this scenario, conventional social institutions, such as the family and the school, are weakened by the power of the appeal exercised by organized crime.
The Cine Debate took place in the context of the Specialization Course in Criminal Sciences at the Law School of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (FDRP/USP), coordinated by professors Cláudio do Prado Amaral and Eduardo Saad Diniz (the latter also a member of the SuCCESS project team).
